Review: Bite, Dublin

I was recently treated to lunch at Dublin’s fish and chip shop, Bite on South Frederick Street. Describing itself as “hip, but not hipster”, Bite offers a refined take on traditional fish and chips, with very tasty results.

Bite’s lunch menu is divided into three main sections: ‘Lunch Bites’, offering a variety of fish options, as well as a chicken or veg choice for the non-pescetarian; ‘Mini Bites’, small but equally delicious morsels; and the Sides.

We were seated in the front room, which was bright and buzzing, the service attentive and friendly. When I explained I couldn’t have dairy, the waitress arranged for my fish to be cooked in an egg-only batter, rather than their standard one.

Fish Finger Wrap at Bite, Dublin

When it came to the ordering, I went for a Mini Bite, the Fish Finger Wrap. Succulent pieces of white fish (in the end I forgot to find out which!) in a crunchy batter served in a wrap with pickled cucumber and rocket. It somewhat lowers the tone to suggest it was akin to a gourmet Filet O’Fish, but it was delicious regardless.

I had a side order of slow roasted beets, carrot, caraway and orange vinaigrette salad which has a lovely flavour and was a really interesting take on a beetroot salad. A friend has also given the Truffle and Parmesan Fries two thumbs up, although obviously they were out for me!

I couldn’t sample my dining companion’s dishes, but she was very pleased with her Tempura Squid Octo Vinaigrette  and Ruby Grapefruit Slaw.

Lunch for two with two “Mini Bites”, two sides, two coffees and two ever so slightly cheeky glasses of wine came to a very reasonable €33 and I’m already looking forward to a return trip to sample some of their delicious-sounding cocktails.
